The mission of the Foundation is to support early-stage investigators engaged in basic and translational research that has the potential to significantly advance biomedical science. Applicants should be in their first to fourth year of a tenure-track faculty position as of July 1, 2026, and not have current R01 funding.  Grants are usually $75,000/year for three years.  Previous UCI awardees include Maxim Plikus and Cholsoon Jang.

The campus may submit no more than one proposal. Interested applicants are asked to submit a preliminary application to the Office of Research by June 1, 2026, at 11:59PM (via the UCI Review application portal), with the following information:

  • Name of PI, contact information, and project title
  • Lay summary – 1 to 2 pages outlining: the gap or roadblock in basic or translational research area, innovation of research, hypothesis and objectives, general experimental approach, potential significance towards understanding, diagnosis or treatment of disease, and how the award will set up the PI for future NIH funding. (Font  – 12pt / Times New Roman or Arial; margins .5 inch or greater)
  • Biosketch – 5-page NIH format

An ad hoc committee will convene to review the preliminary proposals. The selected PI will be notified in time to meet Mallinckrodt’s full application deadline of July 1st.
