In Fiscal Year 2022 the NIH’s Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP), introduced the R24 Equipment Program to support the acquisition and installation of modern research-supporting equipment to enhance the operations and protocols in biomedical research facilities. Core facilities, animal research facilities, and other similar shared-use facilities are spaces targeted by this program. The R24 Equipment Program will issue awards to only domestic academic (public and private) and nonprofit institutions for 1 year. Equipment awarded through this program should provide long-term (5+ years) benefits to the research infrastructure and operations of the proposed shared-use space in the applicant institution.
Examples of equipment supported by the R24 Equipment Program include, but are not limited to, animal research–supporting equipment (e.g., modern ventilated cages for rodents, automated feeding systems, tunnel washers, environmental management devices, telemetry and other electronic systems for management of animal colonies) and biomedical research supporting equipment (e.g., autoclaves/sterilizers, cryogenic gas recovery/recycling systems, 3D printers, automated cell processing equipment, glass washers, fume hoods, high-speed centrifuges, freezers, biosafety cabinets).
This FOA does not support the purchase of scientific research instruments or their components, nor components of building-level infrastructure equipment that indirectly support research activities.
Application budgets must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The maximum award budget is $350,000, direct costs only. Applications with a budget less than $50,000 will not be considered. For requests of multiple pieces of the same equipment, the minimum budget for each piece is $15,000. Auxiliary items required for the main equipment piece to function may be less. Since the scope of different projects will vary, it is anticipated that the size of the awards will vary.
Only one application per institution is allowed. UCI Faculty seeking to an R24 Equipment proposal, are asked to submit preliminary proposals containing the following information to the Office of Research (via UCI Review), by Monday, August 15, 2022:
- A summary (no more than 3 pages) outlining the need for the proposed equipment and how the equipment will benefit multiple units across the biomedical research enterprise at UCI for at least the next five years.
- Preliminary budget estimate of equipment costs
- List of faculty on the proposal (including their titles).
An ad hoc committee will be convened to review the preliminary proposals, and the selected PI will be notified in ample time to meet NIH’s November 7, 2022 deadline.
