The Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education has an RFP to address gun violence and best practices regarding clinical practice and identifying individuals at the highest risk of gun violence..

The Center’s 2025 Funding Opportunity seeks to support individual researchers who intend to engage or are already engaged in research on gun violence prevention. The call is open to applicants at varying stages of the research continuum, including those who seek to:

  • Build capacity within their organization to conduct research on healthcare approaches to addressing community gun violence or firearm suicide.
  • Expand or initiate new research on evidence-informed healthcare practice or clinical care models that address community gun violence or firearm suicide.
  • It is expected that central to all proposed initiatives are efforts to meaningfully engage with communities that have been the most impacted by gun violence.

Eligible research:

  • Advances evidence on effective strategies to reduce community gun violence or firearm suicide in a range of healthcare settings, including hospitals, FQHCs, or other community-based health centers.
  • Advances knowledge about effective strategies to identify individuals as highest risk of community gun violence or firearm suicide in healthcare settings.
  • Advances understanding about clinical best practice to improve care for survivors of community gun violence or firearm suicide.

UCI may only submit two total proposals, so we request that interested faculty submit a one-paragraph Intent to Submit summary describing their research proposal and to which category they intend to apply by Monday, August 4.  Please submit all LOIs through the UCI Review site.  If the Office of Research (OR) receives more than two applications, an ad hoc committee will be convened to decide which two applications best align with the RFP.  Decisions regarding nominations will be made to allow applicants at least 3 weeks to meet the September 3rd, 2:00pm PT sponsor deadline.

Category 1: Up to $100,000, distributed over 2 years. Build the capacity of organizations, institutions, and/or clinical care settings to conduct research on healthcare approaches to address community firearm violence or firearm suicide. 2-page proposal.

Category 2: Up to $300,000, distributed over 2 years. Expand or initiate new research on evidence-informed healthcare practice or clinical care models that address community firearm violence or firearm suicide. 7-page proposal.
